Highlights from Garrett County's Staff Development Day

The county-wide staff development day for the Garrett County Public Schools was held Thursday morning at the fairgrounds. Highlights of the morning activities were:

Southern High School JROTC presented the flag with the Northern High School Band playing the National Anthem. Northern High student and Student Board member, Adriana Fratz, led the staff in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tom Carr, Board of Education President, addressed the staff and welcomed them to a new school year.

Ryan Wolf, Southern High School teacher and Garrett County Teacher of the Year, spoke to the audience with “What it is to be a Teacher!” Mr. Wolf was introduced by Barbara Baker, Assistant Superintendent of Education Services.

Tim Thornburg, Director of Human Resources and Employee Relations, recognized staff employment service by standing and being recognized.

Principals introduced new staff members to the schools.

Dr. Janet Wilson, Superintendent, presented “What’s Trending: Personalization and Perserverance”. She talked about change and making a difference for a positive impact in the new digital age. She also recognized various school accomplishments, including Northern High School’s Blue Ribbon School award. She presented each staff member with a Garrett County Public Schools cap.

Sean McComb, National and Maryland State Teacher of the Year, addressed the staff on the topic of Sparking Hope. He indicated that every child needs champions as mentors. He talked about the culture of the classroom and that teachers need to make themselves available for students to learn by caring, being positive, and teamwork/coaching individuals as an investment in the future.

At the conclusion of the District-Wide Staff Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Wilson and Director of Secondary Education, Paul Edwards, issued an ALS Challenge to Garrett County Public School Principals and staff. Mr. Sean McComb (middle), 2014 National Teacher of the Year, helped to execute the challenge! To view the video, visit:
