Two eighth grade students from Northern Middle School received awards from the Western Maryland Local Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) for their entries in the Chemist's Celebrates Earth Day poem contest. Ms. Katelyn O'Brien, 8th grade science teacher at Northern Middle School, incorporated the chemistry poem contest into her curriculum while teaching about elements, compounds, and the states of matter. The poem contest fit perfectly with the 8th grade science standards and allowed students to use their creativity to demonstrate what they learned. Alexie Arnold was a third place winner in the grade 6-8 category with her poem titled "True Beauty.” Haley Ross's poem, "The wonders of the Ocean" was awarded second place in the same category. Both Northern Middle School students received a certificate and an award check.
