On April 3 - 6, 2014, the Northern Garrett High School Music Department traveled to Nashville, Tennessee.  The department participated in the Worldstrides-Heritage International Music Festival.  Northern was one of 22 school systems represented, consisting of over 1500 students.

This year the school took three concert ensembles, including the Concert Chorus, Women's Chorus, and Concert Band.   A great challenge this year was getting in rehearsal time due to winter weather experienced in February and March.

The Music Department brought home the following awards: Concert Chorus received a "Silver" (Excellent) Award and 2nd place out of seven performing groups in the class. Concert Band received a "Silver" Award and 2nd place out of five bands in the class.  Women's Chorus came home with a "Bronze" (Outstanding) Award and 3rd place out of seven groups in the class.

Featured soloists from the ensembles included Bailey Tiemersma and Brian Tiemersma with the Concert Chorus; Alexis Bagley with the Women's Chorus; and Band soloists, Ben Nairn on trumpet, David Becker on alto saxophone, and Kelsie Moquin on flute.

Besides the festival, the students enjoyed many Nashville attractions.  They toured the famous Ryman Auditorium, which for many years was home to the Grand Ole Opry.  They also attended the Friday night session of the Grand Ole Opry.  The students toured the Country Music Hall of Fame and took in the many sites and sounds of downtown Nashville including the shops and restaurants along Broadway Avenue.  Some of the students and parents visited the recently opened Johnny Cash Museum.  The students concluded the trip with an Awards Ceremony and Dinner/Dance on Saturday evening at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville Restaurant.
