PERRYVILLE, Maryland, January 8, 2014 - Dr. Michael J. Martirano, Superintendent of the St. Mary’s County Public Schools and current president of the Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland (PSSAM) is pleased to announce that
Dr. Kevin Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer, Prince George’s County Public Schools
has just been announced by the American Association of School Administrators as one of four finalists for the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year.  Dr. Maxwell will be interviewed, along with his three fellow finalists, the week of January 13th with the announcement of the winner made on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the National Education Conference being held in Nashville, Tennessee.
“It is just outstanding that a Maryland superintendent has received this recognition by this prestigious organization.  We in Maryland know the tremendous achievements that occur in every school system leading to our number one ranking over the past five years.  I have known Kevin Maxwell both personally and professionally for over twenty years. He is the quintessential superintendent and his efforts to improve student achievement have been unwavering.  He is very deserving of being selected as a finalist for the National Superintendent of the Year award.  On behalf of his fellow superintendents, we congratulate him and wish him the best as the process continues,” said Dr. Michael J. Martirano, Superintendent of Schools and President of PSSAM.
Maryland superintendents announced Dr. Maxwell as the Maryland Superintendent of the Year this previous October 2013 at the PSSAM Fall Conference.  Each year eligible Maryland superintendents apply for this honor and, after review of the application that is used in every state, the Maryland state winner is selected.
Previous to his current assignment as Chief Executive Officer for the Prince George’s County Public Schools, Dr. Maxwell served as the superintendent of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools for seven years.
“Kevin is an excellent candidate for National Superintendent of the Year and deserves the recognition that comes with this honor.  He is an outstanding Maryland education leader and has accomplished much for the children of the counties he served over his tenure as a teacher and leader in our public school systems.  We are proud of him, honored to have him as our Maryland representative and wish him the very best,” said Carl Roberts, Executive Director.
