Dr. Lillian Lowery, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, visited Garrett County Public Schools on Friday, November 15, 2013. Accompanied by Dr. Janet Wilson, she visited the following schools: Friendsville Elementary, Crellin Elementary, Hickory Educational Environmental Center, and Route 40 Elementary.
Upon her arrival at Friendsville, Dr. Lowery was received by students and Mayor Spencer Schlosnagle. She toured the facility, visited classrooms, greeted students and staff, and met with teachers regarding the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.
At Crellin, Dr. Lowery visited classrooms and observed a demonstration of Polycom (internet/video system) by Mrs. Stephens’ 4th grade classroom where students talked to college professors and students at Glenville State College about their research and engagment in collaborative field trips and lessons. Dr. Lowery also toured the outside environmental science areas around the school including Sunshine Farm and the nature study area.

Dr. Lowery later toured the Hickory Education Environmental Center, had lunch with the members of the Board of Education, and visited Route 40 Elementary School before returning to Baltimore.
