State funding for Fiscal Year 2015 (2014-2015 school year) is based on September 30, 2013 enrollment figures reported to Maryland State Department of Education. To date, the school system has lost approximately 130 students, double the projected number.  Due to the efforts of Senator Edwards and Delegate Bietzel during the 2011-2012 legislative session, the School Board was able to hold $700,000 to balance the budget for the current school year. The school system will not have that carryover as it plans for Fiscal Year 2015.  The $700,000 added to the projected revenue loss of 1.5 million dollars in State aid due to the rapid enrollment decline will result in an estimated 2.2 million dollar deficit position as we plan for Fiscal Year 2015 (school year 2014-2015). Garrett County Public Schools has experienced the largest percentage decline in enrollment among all Maryland districts for three of the past four years.  With the current year’s enrollment decline, Garrett County Public School is likely to have the largest decline in four of the past five years.
