Cooking Contest Available to Middle School Students

Last Updated on Feb 4, 2014 at 8:56am | Northern Middle School

In celebration of National Nutrition Month, March 2014, the Dietitians of the Maryland Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (M.A.N.D.) invite you to share in promoting healthy habits among Maryland youth by supporting a recipe contest for Maryland Middle School students. The Adolescent and School Health section of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website states the following:
Schools play a critical role in improving the dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents. Schools can create environments supportive of students’ efforts to eat healthy and be active by implementing policies and practices that support healthy eating and regular physical activity and by providing opportunities for students to learn about and practice these behaviors.
The health of students is linked to their academic success. Both physical activity and healthy eating may help improve academic achievement.
Inspired by initiatives such as the First Lady's Let’s Move! campaign with its mission to solve childhood obesity within a generation, and by USDA’s MyPlate, born of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, M.A.N.D. is sponsoring a recipe contest to encourage Maryland youth to practice healthy habits.
Our hope is this contest will have widespread support by school administrators and teachers as well as interest and participation by students. It is intended to be a fun and creative way for middle school students, developmentally ready to begin meal planning and preparation, to assimilate the ideas of eating healthy and being active.
Contest Flyer and Submission Forms are available at Northern Middle School.  If you would like to have these forms emailed directly to you, please email Mrs. DeVore at
Submissions will be accepted immediately by email and USPS mail up to the deadline of March 15, 2014 @ midnight. The winner will be announcedMarch 31, 2014. Questions (not answered by the attachments) or comments can be emailed to:
