Northern Middle Receives PBIS Gold Award Second ConsecutiveYear

Last Updated on Nov 6, 2013 at 1:07pm | Northern Middle School

Northern Middle School received the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Maryland GOLD Recognition Award again for the 2012-13 school year.  This is the highest level of recognition available in the PBIS Maryland program. This level of recognition is reserved for those schools that have demonstrated sustainability for the systems, practices, and data utilization for school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports as well as positive effects on both school discipline and achievement data for at least two years.  Northern Middle School’s PBIS Team first achieved GOLD status for the 2011-2012 school year.
In applying for recognition at the Gold level, the team cited increasing parent contact, revising the school rules, repeating expectations to students daily through various means, and rewarding desirable behavior with desirable incentives introduced at the beginning of the school year as positive interventions and supports that benefitted Northern Middle School.
As part of the PBIS initiative for the 2013-14, street signs have been installed on all of the main hallways in the school.  The streets were named to reflect the values that are reinforced through the school PBIS mantra; Prepared, Attentive, Working & Safe.  In addition to supporting the PBIS goals, the street signs also assist orientation and mobility throughout the school.
The signs were made by Ryan Savage of Savage Designs and installed by staff members and students.
