Northern Garrett High School (NGHS) baseball coach Phil Carr was recognized by the Garrett County Board of Education (GCBOE) Tuesday evening. It was announced in February that Coach Carr would be one of two coaches inducted as a member into the 2022 class of the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.

Carr’s coaching career spans 33 years, all at NGHS. He achieved victory number 400 as a coach in the 2021 season, with the team making it all the way to the state semifinals in the MPSSAA Class 1A Baseball State Tournament that year. This season, in 2022, the team advanced to the Region Semifinals of the tournament last month. In coaching NGHS baseball, Carr boasts an impressive 420-173 win-loss record.

“I would like to thank the Board of Education for recognizing me for this accomplishment. They are the ones responsible for giving me the opportunity 33 years ago,” Coach Phil Carr said of his nomination. I feel very humbled to be selected into the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches. It has been a lot of hard work and time invested each season. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to work with a great bunch of kids and assistant coaches over the years. I hope that I have had a positive influence on all the young men that have gone through our program.”

In addition to baseball, Coach Carr is currently the Health and Physical Education teacher at NGHS. He also coaches the NGHS Football team and is the Assistant Coach for the Garrett County American Legion Baseball team. He has helped coach each of these teams to the state finals in the past.

"I played on Coach Carr's first team as head coach at Northern, so I know firsthand how good of a coach he is,” said Paul Edwards, Director of Secondary Education, CTE, and Athletics. “We are very fortunate to have him in our system, as he is clearly one of the best high school coaches in the state. When we go to regional or state meetings together, it is evident that Coach Carr is universally respected by his peers due to his years of success. He has had a remarkable career!"

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in a virtual format this year. Coach Carr will give his acceptance speech during the 2023 banquet.
