GCPS Adopts Updated Quarantine and Isolation Guidelines

Last Updated on Jan 14, 2022 at 3:25pm

Beginning on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, Garrett County Public Schools will adopt new quarantine and isolation guidelines as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Maryland Department of Health.

New Quarantine Guidelines

Unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated individuals who meet the definition of close contact with an individual who is positive for COVID 19, will be permitted to return to school after five full days from their last exposure with the positive individual as long as they are asymptomatic and they are able to provide a negative COVID 19 test result administered by a qualified professional on day 5 of quarantine or later.

  • The day of exposure is considered day 0.
  • Parents may schedule a time for their child to be tested at their school by the school nurse.
  • Those who return after 5 full days must be able to wear a well-fitted mask for the following 5 days.
  • Based on recommendations from the Maryland Health Department, masks may be removed only when eating and during naptime.
  • Individuals who are unable to wear a well-fitted mask will be required to quarantine for the full 10 days.
  • Those students who participate in sports, band, or other high risk exposure activities such as singing or physical activity will be unable to participate for an additional 5 days.

Fully vaccinated individuals or those who had a confirmed case of COVID 19 in the last 90 days and subsequently recovered who meet the definition of close contact with an individual who is positive for COVID 19, will not be required to quarantine as long as they are asymptomatic.

  • It is recommended that fully vaccinated individuals get tested at least 5 days after their last close contact with someone with COVID 19 and monitor for symptoms.
  • Fully vaccinated is defined as those who have received all recommended vaccine doses including any boosters for which the person is eligible.

If an individual develops symptoms while in quarantine regardless of vaccination status, he/she should get tested immediately and isolate until the test results are received. If the individual tests positive, the isolation guidance will be followed.

New Isolation Guidelines

Individuals positive for COVID 19 regardless of vaccination status will be permitted to return to school after five full days of isolation as long as symptoms have improved.

  • Improved symptoms include no active cough, no fever for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications, and no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours.
  • The day symptoms began or the date of positive test results is considered day 0 of isolation.
  • Those who return after 5 full days must be able to wear a well-fitted mask for the following 5 days.
  • Based on recommendations from the Maryland Health Department, masks may be removed only when eating and during naptime.
  • Individuals who are unable to wear a well-fitted mask will be required to isolate for the full 10 days.
  • Those students who participate in sports, band, or other high risk exposure activities such as singing or physical activity will be unable to participate for an additional 5 days.

As we work through this transition period, please be aware of the following criteria for students returning:

  • If currently in isolation and/or in quarantine:
    • Follow the previously adopted 10-14 day quarantine and isolation period.
  • If you are asked to quarantine or isolate on or after January 19, 2022:
    • Follow the new guidelines in this document.
This information along with any further details will be reflected in the revised GCPS Reopening and Recovery Plan that will be published by the end of this month. Individual questions regarding quarantine and/or isolation should continue to be addressed to the nurse at each child's school.
