Last Updated on Jan 17, 2018 at 8:41am |

A unique Rockcreek Steel Drums music residency was recently held at Crellin Elementary School for a week, led by Kevin Martin. Students learned the basics of steel drum playing and performance as they prepared for the final concert held at Garrett College on Thursday evening, January 11, 2018, and again at the school on Friday morning.  The residency was sponsored by the Garrett County Arts Council, Crellin Elementary School, Crellin Parent Teacher Organization, and Young Audiences of Maryland.

Kevin Martin has been building and playing steel drums for more than 20 years. In 2012, Kevin was named Young Audiences of Maryland’s “Artist of the Year.”

Rockcreek Steel Drums is one of the largest manufacturers of steel drum musical instruments in the United States. This music residency brought a complete steel drum band program to the school. Students learned the basics of steel drum playing and performance as they prepared for a final concert. A full sized steel drum instrument was provided for each student. The classes learned methods to produce good tone and play melodies using the proper mallet technique. Basic percussion skills were taught using “Tamboo Bamboo” instruments. Students learned to read music symbols and charts from another culture while exploring Calypso music.
