Two proposed school calendars for 2018-19 were presented to the Garrett County Board of Education at its January 9th meeting. The calendars can be reviewed by visiting the school system’s website at:
For the proposed school calendars, one calendar is a post-Labor Day start and the other a pre-Labor Day start. Governor Hogan’s Executive Order mandates that all school systems start after Labor Day. However, the Executive Order also allows for school systems to request a waiver to start before Labor Day. Garrett County is eligible to request a waiver because it has closed ten days per year during two of the last five years due to severe weather conditions. Should the Board of Education choose to do so, it may request the Maryland State Board of Education to approve the waiver for the 2018-19 school year.
Please note, the calendar committee has recommended that parent conferences be held in the evenings during the 2018-19 school year. Neither draft calendar includes parent conferences as they will be added if the Board accepts the recommendation.
The Board is requesting the public to review the proposed calendars and submit any comments by noon on Thursday, February 8, 2018, to the Public Information Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or in writing to:
