GCPS will Host FTC Robotics Tournament

Last Updated on Jan 23, 2018 at 1:10pm

Garrett County will host the Maryland qualification tournament for the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams this Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Northern Garrett High School. Although Garrett County has participated in the qualification event for Maryland FIRST LEGO League (FLL) since 2010, this will be the first time that we have had the opportunity to serve as the host an FTC qualifier.

FIRST Tech Challenge teams (10+ members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. This year, Garrett County has seven FTC teams: five GCPS teams, a home schooled team sponsored by Crossroads Church and the 4-H/GEARS sponsored team, G-Force. All Garrett County teams except for G-Force will be competing. G-Force has been designated as the host team for the event and will be providing volunteers to run the event along with Garrett County’s public high school FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1629 (GaCo). There will be approximately 20 teams ranging across six states in this year’s competition. Western Maryland will be represented by six teams from Garrett County and three teams from Allegany County.

As with all FIRST events, the FTC qualifier at Northern Garrett is free and open to the public. Qualification matches will begin in the school’s gymnasium at 11:00 am and will proceed throughout the afternoon until 4:30 pm. The award ceremony is scheduled for 5:00 pm. We would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to our sponsors for this event. They include Garrett County Public Schools, Garrett County Economic Development, GEARS, Garrett Container Systems, Pillar Innovations, Beitzel Corporation, Phenix Technologies, Total Biz Fulfillment, Wilson Supply, and Garrett College.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams build robots that must have a starting volume not to exceed 18” x 18” x 18” and compete on a twelve foot square playing field in a 2vs2 match scenario. Every year new robots are built to meet each season’s challenge game. This year’s game is “Relic Recovery.” For more details about FTC and the Relic Recovery challenge go to: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/ftc/game-and-season.
