Northern Middle School Receives Grant

Northern Middle School is a proud recipient of a $1,000 grant from Action for Healthy Kids® (AFHK) for the 2017-2018 school year. The Game On grant is provided through funding by CSX Transportation to expand student access to physical activity and healthy foods in school, improve knowledge and behaviors around physical activity and healthy eating, and engage parents in activities that reinforce healthy habits at home.  Amy Rowan, teacher at Northern Middle School, applied for the grant last year with a goal of helping students who like to be active while learning.

Northern Middle School will use its grant to purchase 20 portable pedal exercisers to be placed under student desks to incorporate leg or arm body movements while learning. Northern Middle School recognizes that youth need to be active not only for physical health benefits, but for mental health benefits too. “Our staff understands how challenging it is for students to sit in 60 minute classes, so we want to incorporate more opportunity for movement without interrupting a student’s academic learning time,” says Rowan. The pedal bikes will be available to any teacher to sign up and use.

“We recognize the impact of physical activity and good nutrition on our students’ health and learning and are excited to create an even healthier school environment with the funding and resources from Action for Healthy Kids and CSX,” said Amy Rowan
Northern Middle School is one of 300 schools receiving a CSX-funded Game On grant along with technical support to implement its grant utilizing AFHK’s Game On program in the 2017-2018 school year. Since 2013, CSX-supported school grants have helped 1,353 schools implement health and wellness initiatives, impacting nearly 700,000 students.
