Southern High School Salutatorian Acknowledgement

Last Updated on Jun 22, 2017 at 10:59pm |

This statement is issued by Garrett County Public Schools on behalf of Mr. Jim Maddy, Southern Garrett High School Principal.
It is with much disappointment that I make this announcement documenting an error made by the Southern High School regarding class rank. The 2017 class ranking for Southern High School’s Salutatorian was calculated incorrectly, depriving Jonah Facciolli of the Salutatorian recognition earned while attending Southern High School. Jonah has earned the second highest academic rank for the Southern Garrett High School Class of 2017, and is, therefore, the Southern High School Salutatorian! I respectfully regret depriving Jonah of the opportunity to be recognized at the Senior Awards Celebration, having his photograph placed in the Republican recognizing him as the Salutatorian, providing him the opportunity to address his classmates during the 2017 Graduation Ceremony, and I especially regret not providing Jonah the community recognition he rightfully earned.

I would like to congratulate Jonah for his accomplishments and acknowledge his efforts listed below:

  • Hopkins Grant
    •  $40,000 annually to attend Johns Hopkins University
  • Tri-State Math Competition place winner
  • Project Lead The Way Pre-Engineering dual pathway completer
  • Four-year member of the soccer team
  • Theatre productions
  • Distinguished Honor Roll every term grades 9-12
  • 32 credits earned
  • 20 honors/AP level credits earned
  • Cumulative weighted GPA 4.394
  • G-Force Robotics Team 2818
  • Dual Enrollment with Garrett College

Jonah has been an outstanding student at Southern High. His academic accomplishments deserve recognition. I truly regret the error that was made while calculating class rank, and I am grateful that the error was brought to my attention, which provided me the opportunity to recognize Jonah and his efforts. I am hopeful my sincere apology is met with acceptance. Procedures will be established at Southern High to ensure this error is not repeated in the future. I wish Jonah the best in his future studies at Johns Hopkins University and all future endeavors.

Jim Maddy
Principal, Southern Garrett High School

Mr. Maddy would like to add that this error in no way diminishes the accomplishments of Morgan Winegardner while she was a student at Southern.

Like Jonah, Morgan maintained an excellent GPA by taking advanced placement courses. She also served as Senior Class President and was involved in numerous activities at Southern. She should be commended for her excellent speech to her classmates at graduation. We owe Morgan a hearfelt apology on behalf of Southern High School.

Superintendent Barbara Baker added, "Finishing in the top three of your graduating class should be celebrated. I hope both students will accept my apology and know how deeply sorry we are if our error has caused you any pain."
