High School Science Credit Reduction Request

Last Updated on Jan 23, 2017 at 3:07pm

At the recent Board of Education meeting, it was introduced that Policy #IK, “Maryland and Garrett County Graduation Requirements”, is under a complete and comprehensive revision for presentation to the Policy Committee at a future date. However, due to high school scheduling and the printing of the Student Educational Planning Guide (SEPG), a decision with respect to a request for a credit reduction in science from 4 to 3 was requested. With the implementation of Next Generation Science Standards and the addition of new courses to meet the associated Performance Expectations (PEs) for Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA), professionals from instruction, administration, and guidance have reached a consensus to request a reduction of the required credits in science. However, the total graduation requirement credit count of 23 would remain intact, which is still is 2 credits above the state’s mandate of 21.

The policy in question is still under complete and total revision. Given the many changes in testing and graduation, the policy as it stands is outdated. The singular change for science credit count is the only change being requested at this time.

If there are any comments regarding the reduction of high school science credits from 4 to 3, please comment at public.info@garrettcountyschools.org before Wednesday, February 8, 2017.
