Garrett County Public Schools Summer Food Service program introduced its new mobile dining trailer this summer. The mobile dining trailer is used in areas of the county for meal sites that have no sheltered eating areas. For this reason, Summer Food Service now has an enclosed trailer with booth-type seating to make a small dining area where the children can come in out of the weather. To meet the Summer Food Service requirements, children must stay on site to eat their meals. The trailer was purchased with funds from several benefactors, including a grant from No Kid Hungry - Share Our Strength, donations from Hilltop Fruit Market and The Farmers Market in Garrett County, and Johnnie’s Restaurant & Hotel Services in Chambersburg, PA.
The trailer is averaging over 30 meals a day in its three stops. It stops first at Liberty Mews (11:00 a.m.), proceeds to the Crellin Methodist Church parking lot (11:35 a.m.), and then completes its run at the Oakland Town parking lot Farmers Market Pavilion (12:10 p.m.).
Overall, the Summer Food Service program in Garrett County has grown from two sites three years ago to 11 sites this summer serving over 210 children every day Monday thru Friday through August 24th. The sites are open to all children 18 and under, even if they are not from the area.
Keep an eye out for us this summer. If you see the trailer going down the road, give us a wave or stop by and join us for a meal.
