Southern High students from financial management classes earned first and second place rankings in the Western Region of the Spring 2016 Stock Market Game competition. In fact, 14 of the top 20 teams playing the game came from SHS. There was a total of 67 teams who competed from Garrett, Allegany, Washington, and Frederick schools. This 10 week classroom activity is offered through the National Council on Economic Education and hosted statewide by the Maryland Council for Econ Ed. Locally, the teams at SHS are provided funding to compete in the game by My Bank, First United and the SGHS Alumni Association. During the 2015-16 school year, 148 students from financial management classes or Rams Period stock market game enrichment class competed in this activity.

Rob Sharps, retired financial services executive, served as the classroom advisor. He has partnered with SHS business teachers Lisa Bender and Athena Wilson for the past 21 years. “This hands-on research project engages students in real-time, real-world learning. Even though they are investing virtually, students are connecting their decisions to the global economy; they’re following economic events and they’re developing critical thinking skills as they manage a stock portfolio for 10 weeks. It’s a win-win situation” said Lisa Bender.

Pictured below are the members of the first and second place teams.
