Weather Related School Alert: All Garrett County Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, February 20, 2019, because of the predicted inclement weather that includes possible heavy snowfall and ice accumulation. Code Orange and liberal leave in effect for employees. Administrative offices will open at 10:00 AM. Should a change in code status for employees be necessary, the announcement will be made by 8:00 AM.

Board of Education Recognitions and Proclamations - February 9, 2015

The Garrett County Board of Education acknowledged several recognitions and proclamations at its recent Board meeting on February 9, 2016.

Student Christmas Card Artwork – Amariah Skipper
Ms. Amariah Skipper, a fifth grade student at Broad Ford Elementary School, was the designer of the Christmas card which was sent from the Board of Education and the Superintendent to the employees, each Maryland school superintendent, and various county and state agencies in December 2015. Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board member, presented Amariah with the recognition.

National School Counseling Week
Mrs. Cynthia Downton, Vice President, recognized School Counseling Week, February 1-5, 2016, with a Board Proclamation. School Counselors Ms. Sarah Carlisle (Broad Ford), Mrs.
Dawn Panther (Southern Middle), Ms. Connie Kamp (Accident and Friendsville), Mr. Tim Watson (Yough Glades) and Dr. Phil Lauver, Supervisor of Pupil Services, received the proclamation on behalf of all school counselors.

Route 40 Elementary – January 2016 Best Practices of the Month
Mr. Thomas Carr, Board member, recognized Route 40 Elementary School for being selected by the Maryland Center for Character Education as the “January 2016 Best Practices of the Month" school. In addition to this statewide recognition, the school was chosen by the Board of Directors for the Maryland Center for Character Education at Stevenson University to be featured on its website and newsletter because of the strength of the character education program. Mrs. Candy Maust, Principal, and Ms. Donna Deal, teacher, provided information regarding the character education programs.

FLL Team NeXT Gen Presentation
The FLL Team NeXT GEN Lego team, which includes students from Swan Meadow, Southern Middle and Northern Middle Schools, presented its research project on recycling. The team will be going to the state competition on March 5, 2016. The team is one of the 3 winning teams from the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Qualifier on Dec. 12, 2015, and the only team of the three with all public school students. Ms. Arlene Lantz, Ms. Ronnie DiGioia, and Mr. Phil Malone are the coaches.
