Northern Garrett High School to Host FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Qualifier on December 12, 2015

Last Updated on Dec 1, 2015 at 2:25pm

A FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Competition will be held at Northern Garrett High School on Saturday, December 12, 2015. Sixteen teams from Garrett and Allegany counties will be competing for one of four invitations to the Maryland State FLL Tournament in March, 2016. Hosted by the local FIRST Robotics Team 1629, teams will be judged in four categories including robot performance, research presentation on the challenge theme, robot design, and the core values of FIRST. This year’s challenge theme is TRASH TREK. The TRASH TREK Challenge asks teams to explore the hidden but fascinating world of trash, from collection, sorting, smart production, to reuse. The teams must also invent a solution to help our trash problem and create their own LEGO MINDSTORMS robot to accomplish trash-themed “missions” on a playing field, and show how well they practice FIRST LEGO League Core Values. More information on this challenge can be found at: .

FLL teams consist of up to ten students, ages 9 through 14. Along with presenting creative solutions to problems in trash, teams will be competing with LEGO based robots. Teams build and program the robots in advance of the event to autonomously score as many points as possible on this year’s challenge filed in three separate two and a half minute matches.

The event is free and open to the public. Actual robot matches will begin at 12:30 PM and continue through the afternoon. An awards presentation is scheduled for 2:30 PM. Teams will undergo research and technical judging, as well as participate in practice rounds with the robots in the morning. The event at Northern High School is one of seventeen qualification events in which teams must compete in order to go on to the Maryland State FLL Tournament at UMBC in March, 2016. There are approximately 360 teams competing across the state. FIRST LEGO League is a worldwide program with over 25,000 teams in more than 80 countries. Nearly 200,000 children discover the fun and excitement in science and technology through the FLL events.
