Mountain Top College Expo - October 12

Last Updated on Oct 2, 2015 at 11:39am

The Mountain Top College Expo, sponsored by Garrett County Public Schools and Garrett College, will be held on Monday, October 12, in the gymnasium on the college’s McHenry campus.   Attendees can visit with college representatives from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  “This annual college fair provides area students with a great opportunity to gather information in order to prepare for the future,” said Dr. Phil Lauver, Supervisor of Pupil Services for Garrett County Public Schools.  The event is free and open to the public, and students of all ages are encouraged to attend.  Home school and private school students also are welcome, according to Rachelle Davis, director of enrollment at Garrett College and one of the Expo coordinators.
The program begins at 6:00 p.m. with a financial aid presentation, also in the gymnasium complex.  Garrett College financial aid staff will be on hand to answer questions about federal, state, and local scholarships and aid programs, including the Garrett County Scholarship.  A scholarship booklet with information on nearly 100 other scholarship opportunities will be available, courtesy of Garrett County Public Schools.
Davis noted that the Expo provides a great opportunity for students and parents to explore the many options for further education in the region.  To date, more than 30 colleges and universities from Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia have registered to exhibit at the Expo.  The event usually attracts approximately 40 institutions.  College representatives will share information on a wide variety of programs of study, student support, athletic opportunities, and financial assistance.
Students who attend the College Expo also will be eligible to register for scholarship prizes.  One senior from Northern Garrett High School and one from Southern Garrett High will be selected to receive a $500 scholarship, which can be used at any college or university.  Second place winners from each school will be awarded a $250 scholarship.  The Garrett College Foundation also will award two book scholarships.
The college gymnasium is located on Mosser Road, just beyond the college’s main campus.  For more information about the Mountaintop College Expo, please call the Garrett College Office of Admissions at 301-387-3044 or toll-free 866-554-2773 and visit
