Last Updated on Sep 30, 2015 at 2:45pm

Garrett County Public Schools will be promoting Walk Maryland Day on October 7, 2015. Walk Maryland Day is a collaborative effort between the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), and the University of Maryland Extension (UMDE), and was planned to coincide with the National Walk to School Day event for elementary and middle school children. On this day, all Maryland residents are encouraged to designate a portion of their day to take a walk. Schools and worksites are called to host an organized walk on this day, and to support ongoing walking activities at their locations. Schools can register their participation at www.walkbiketoschool.org .

Walking is Maryland’s State Exercise. Walking has many health benefits, according to the American Heart Association. Research shows that walking for at least 30 minutes a day can help people:
Reduce the risk of heart disease;
Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels;
Improve blood lipid (cholesterol) profile;
Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity;
Enhance mental well being;
Reduce the risk of osteoporosis;
Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer;
Reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

The goals of Walk Maryland Day are to:
