The Garrett County Board of Education acknowledged Northern Middle School for its PBIS Maryland GOLD Recognition Award at its recent Board meeting on September 8, 2015.

Northern Middle School received the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Maryland GOLD Recognition Award again for the 2014-15 school year. This is the highest level of recognition available in the PBIS Maryland program. This level of recognition is reserved for those schools that have demonstrated sustainability for the systems, practices, and data utilization for school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports as well as positive effects on both school discipline and achievement data for at least two years. Northern Middle School’s PBIS Team first achieved GOLD status for the 2011-2012 school year and has won this for 4 consecutive years.

In applying for recognition at the Gold level, the team cited increasing parent contact, revising the school rules, repeating expectations to students daily through various means, and rewarding desirable behavior with desirable incentives introduced at the beginning of the school year as positive interventions and supports that benefitted Northern Middle School.
