Ms. Annie Fratz (SMOB, GCASC President, and NHS SGA President) and Ms. Y. Michelle Harman (Supervisor of College and Career Readiness) represented Garrett County Public Schools and Western Maryland recently as members of the Maryland Association of Student Councils delegation who attended the recent NASC LEAD Conference held in Washington, D.C. January 30 - February 1, 2015.
A record registration brought together nearly 1,500 student leaders, advisors, workshop presenters, and others for this 2 1/2 day event. Students from over 35 states and countries attended this year's event. Participants attended a number of Workshop Sessions as well as several General Sessions. Keynote speakers included The "Original" Mike Smith who presented "Making a Bigger Difference - If Not Me, Then Who?" In the second General Session, students were treated to a presentation from The Media Guy in an exciting multi-media presentation designed to make student laugh, think and remember as it focused on relevant topics for today's teens including bullying, drinking and driving, distracted driving, and drug abuse. The third General Session speaker, Mr. Stu Shaffer presented "Capture the Spirit" - a nearly 2 hour presentation that involved the entire crowd in fun, spirit activities and other activities designed to reach all students and raise school spirit through a multitude of "take home" activities for students to try in their home schools. Lastly, the closing General Session speaker, Ms. Amy Gallimore presented "The Big Red Fire Truck" which was an energy-filled speech focusing on student involvement, goal-setting, and dreaming big.
Members of student governments - both middle and high, National Honor Societies, National Junior Honor Societies and more attended this event to build leadership skills, make powerful connections with students from across the globe, bond in their own regions, and exchange ideas in this action-packed event.
