Route 40 School recently participated in the ALS challenge in honor of Mrs. Ashby, our former third grade teacher. Mrs. Ashby's son, Mark, challenged Mrs. Maust. In order to support the organization started by her family, Acting Out for ALS, Mrs. Maust decided to complete a coin drive the first week of school. Staff and students raised $550 for the cause. All staff names were placed on coin jars and students were given the opportunity to have the three highest collectors take the challenge. In the true spirit of love and unity, the entire teaching staff chose to participate, along with Mrs. Ashby's husband, Bob.

All donations were sent to Acting Out for ALS in Mrs. Ashby's name. This organization produces children's plays to raise awareness and funding for the ALS Association, DC/MD/VA chapter. The funds from this organization support ALS patients and their families in the mid Atlantic region with assistive devices, medical costs and other expenses. Acting Out for ALS is currently working on Aladdin Jr. which will open November 14. There are also plans for a spring musical. Anyone wanting to get involved can go to www.actingoutforals.com for additional information and how to sign up for their November 1 Walk to Defeat ALS team.
