Board of Education Recognitions on April 8, 2014

The Board of Education recognized three winter sports achievements at its meeting on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Southern Middle School.
 

Northern High Unified Bocce Team Gold Medal Winners
 

The Northern Husky Unified Bocce team received the gold medal award in the Division VI State Championships at Hagerstown Community College on Tuesday, February 25th. The Garrett County team advanced to the State games by taking a gold medal at the district playoffs held at Mt. Ridge High School earlier in the month. The team had set a goal at the beginning of the season, and with the help of several key players, remained focused on accomplishing its lofty goal.
 
Northern High School’s Unified Bocce team consists of:  Brady Benton, Meghan Bequette, Abby Burdock, Joseph Burdock, Ashton Chapman, McKenna Fazenbaker, Brittany Griffin, Bethany Hershberger, Justin Hershberger, Courtney Lowery, Annette Needham, Ryan VanNosdeln, David Vitez, Tiffany Warnick, Linda Wengerd (coach), and Kris DeWitt (coach).

Southern High Girls Basketball Champions
 

The Southern High School Lady Rams Basketball Team won the Maryland State Class 1A State Basketball Title on March 15th.  The girls played at Towson University's SECU Arena, defeating Baltimore County's New Town High School 52-47 to win the school's third state title. Prior to defeating New Town, Southern knocked off the heavily favored Mardela Warriors in a close 53-52 score. The Rams’ third state title follows championships in 2007 and 2004. Southern has also played in the title game during the 1995 and 2001 seasons.
 
Southern High Girls Basketball team consists of:  Lauren Francillon, Kamrin Weimer, Emma Shaffer, Kambrie Bosley, Holly Weissgerber, Alicia Roth, Faith Tichnell, Crystal Tobery, Brianna Evans, Marley Merrick, Nikki Pysell, Paranda Uber, Head Coach Danny Bosley, and Assistant Coaches Ted Raynovich, Bill Weissgerber, Mel Evans, and Mike Weimer.

Austin Shaffer, Southern High Wrestling Championship Winner 


Southern High senior Austin Shaffer, for the second time in his storied career, reached the pinnacle of high school wrestling by winning the 1A/2A Maryland State Wrestling Championship in the 113-lb weight class. Shaffer defeated South Carroll's Tim Null by a 9-5 decision in the title bout to end his season with an overall record of 44-2. Shaffer won his first state championship in 2012 as a sophomore in the 106-lb class and finished his career at Southern with 157 wins, earning him fifth place for all-time career wins by a Maryland public high school wrestler. Shaffer's second state championship was the 19th for Southern Garrett wrestling, which moves the team into sixth place on the all-time list of MPSSAA schools with the most individual state wrestling champions.
