As the community is aware, the winter weather patterns in Garrett County have brought about hardships on the delivery of instruction. As we all know, March may continue to bring winter-like weather. At this point in time, the school system has been closed nineteen (19) days due to inclement weather.
The Board of Education would like the community to be aware of the following information:
- At the Board’s February meeting, it determined that any consideration for waiver days would be made after March so as to afford the Board a more accurate count of days missed due to inclement weather.
- School systems are required to operate schools which are open for pupil attendance for at least 180 actual school days and a minimum of 1,080 school hours during a 10-month period, and open a minimum of 3 hours during each school day (Md. Code Ann. Ed. Art. § 7-103).
- The school system is in dialogue with Maryland State Department of Education to determine what alternatives will be considered possible in adjusting the calendar.
We respectfully request your patience as we work through the appropriate processes and communications that need to occur to resolve this matter. Please refer to the website periodically for updates.
