Congratulations to Rebecca Brenneman from Northern Middle School and Derek Berger from Northern High School who were both selected as Elks Teachers of the Year for 2013-2014.
Mr. Berger is a 9-12 grade Science/Physics/Engineering teacher at Northern High School. As a teacher, he has high expectations and works diligently to assure that his classroom provides multiple opportunities for students to succeed. He is familiar with all current trends in education and spends countless hours with students – tutoring and mentoring. He is a leader in the school with respect to understanding and implementing new standards and initiatives. Currently, he is the Science Department Chair as well as a member of various groups and chair of other committees, etc. He eagerly accepts challenges and readily solves problems, effectively coordinating group efforts to reach goals set forth. Additionally, he has brought much technology to his department and to his classroom in an effort to expose students to as much as he possibly can and permit them the privilege of usage of technology to solve today’s problems. Within the community, he has served as a Winter Sports Team Coach and Science Partner for Pushing the Limits at the Ruth Enlow Library.
He is currently serving as the 2013-2014 Garrett County Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Brenneman is a sixth grade math teacher at Northern Middle School. She takes her role as teacher very seriously and works hard to instill the knowledge and love of math to her students. She is passionate and dedicated to her teaching position. Ms. Brenneman is an asset to Northern Middle School and she is very deserving of this award.
