The 5th annual FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Maryland State qualification tournament was held this past Saturday, December 14, at Northern Garrett High School. Thirteen teams competed for three invitations to the Maryland State Championship which will be at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in Baltimore on March 1. Congratulations to local teams NeXT GEN, Freez’n Point, and iLEGO for coming in first, second and third place, respectively, as the tournament’s all around winners who will be moving on to compete at the state tournament.

Of the thirteen teams competing, twelve were from Garrett County and one from Allegany County. The team from Allegany County was composed of students from Beall Elementary School. Garrett County teams included students from Northern and Southern Middle Schools, and most of the county’s elementary schools including two teams composed of students exclusively from Route 40 School and one team each from Accident and Friendsville Elementary schools. There are approximately 350 FLL teams in Maryland and over 20,000 teams in over 70 countries. Teams can consist of up to ten youngsters, 9 through 14 years of age.

Teams were judged in four areas: (1) a research project on a topic which related to the challenge theme for the year, (2) a technical judging on the student’s understanding of their robot, (3) team work, and (4) the actual performance of their robot. This year’s FLL challenge theme was called “Nature’s Fury” which focuses on how communities prepare for, survive, and rebuild from natural disasters.

The Garrett Qualifier is one of seventeen throughout the State of Maryland and is conducted by Garrett County’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) high school team and the Garrett Coalition (GaCo) composed of students from both Northern and Southern High Schools in conjunction with state organizers. The team expresses sincere gratitude to all the volunteers and judges that made the event a success. Judges were solicited from the team’s partner, Pillar Innovations, Inc, team mentors, GCPS central office staff, county government, and the community at large. The team also wishes to thank event sponsors, Total Biz Fulfillment and Garrett Container Systems, Inc., as well as Dr. Janet Wilson, Superintendent of Schools, for welcoming teams as part of the tournament’s opening ceremonies.
