Ms. Barbara Baker, Superintendent of Schools, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Jacqueline Hawkins to the position of Principal of Route 40 Elementary School beginning in the 2021-22 school year. She is a graduate of Northern High School, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a Master’s Degree in Teaching form Frostburg State University. She also holds a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrator I and II endorsements, as well as a Post Master’s Certificate in Educational Leadership from FSU.
Ms. Hawkins, an educator for 17 years, began her tenure in Allegany County as a high school mathematics teacher. Since 2006, she has served as a mathematics teacher at Northern Garrett High School and a math and algebra 1 teacher at Northern Garrett Middle School. She has also attended the Educator Effectiveness Academy and will be attending the MSDE Standard Setting Workshop this summer for Grade 8 and Algebra 1.
Superintendent Baker stated, “Mrs. Hawkins served GCPS for many years as a very successful educator. The Route 40 principal also has teaching responsibilities and therefore, this position is an excellent fit for Ms. Hawkins. She will be instrumental in ensuring a successful return and recovery for the students and staff of Route 40.”
While serving in various teacher leadership roles within the school system, Mrs. Hawkins also piloted several online math programs, including ALEKS and DeltaMath. During COVID, she facilitated an Algebra 1 Professional Learning Community where she led conversations regarding curriculum, pacing, and the use of digital tools to help improve online instruction. Her considerable expertise in technology, as well as her leadership talents, will be invaluable in her new role as principal.
