State Farm Youth Advisory Board Award

Last Updated on Dec 10, 2013 at 7:20pm | Crellin Elementary School

Crellin Elementary is a recipient of a $35,000 State Farm® Youth Advisory Board grant. Their project, Building Agricultural Responsibility in Our Neighborhood (BARN) will support the school’s effort in teaching sustainability, research skills, and service-learning. Crellin Elementary has started an agricultural program. In the schoolyard you will find a new barn, barnyard, and two lambs - twenty chickens will be arriving next week. The funds awarded will be used to support student research projects and the purchase of a greenhouse which will serve as an instructional tool as well as a means to grow fresh vegetables for students and their families.

State Farm® supports school-based service-learning. Service-learning is a teaching approach integrating service to the community with classroom curriculum through a hands-on approach. Students address community needs while strengthening their academic performance. They also learn civic responsibility and develop meaningful leadership and workplace skills. Research indicates that school-based service-learning encourages students to become active participants in their education.

Rob Michael, local State Farm Agent, commented, "I know that all of the good work at Crellin is a team effort and my congratulations goes to all of the staff, faculty, assistants, parents and community members.  I consider Crellin Elementary to be the university of grade schools, one that goes beyond the boundaries of the norm.  I hope the $35,000 grant will continue to foster the birth of new ideas that engage the mind and wonderment of the students."
