SPECIAL MEETING OF THE GARRETT COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

Part I - Call to Order
Mr. Patrick Riley, president of the Garrett County Board of Education, called the special meeting to order at approximately 6:08 p.m. Members in attendance included Mr. James Raley, vice president, Mr. Dale Carpenter and Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, associate members, and Dr. Wendell Teets, Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Riley led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and offered the invocation. At 6:10 p.m., Mr. Rodney Durst, associate member, joined the meeting.
Part II - Acceptance of Agenda
Upon a motion by Mr. Raley, seconded by Mrs. Sebold, the agenda was unanimously accepted with the addition of Consideration of Travel Approval.
Part III - Professional Leave and Travel Approval Request
Upon a motion by Mrs. Sebold, with a second by Mr. Raley, the Board unanimously approved the travel request for Sheila Miller and Pat Foley to attend the 14th National Reading Styles Conference in Chicago, Illinois, from July 11 through 14, 1998. All expenses will be covered through the Schools for Success grant.
Part IV - Announcements
Dr. Teets announced that a summons has been received in that Cleveland Construction Company has filed civil suit in Garrett County Circuit Court.
Part V - Executive Session
Upon a motion by Mrs. Sebold, seconded by Mr. Carpenter, the Board of Education unanimously agreed to move to executive session in accordance with Public School Law 4-106 and Section 10-508 of the State Government Title for the purpose of discussing personnel matters that affect one or more individuals. During executive session, topics included a retirement, extended personal leave without pay, assignments and transfers. Dr. Teets, Dr. Brenda McCartney and Miss Henrietta Lease were present during portions of the executive session.
At 6:55 p.m. the Board took a five minute recess at which time Mr. Al Coviello arrived to say good-bye. The Board presented Mr. Coviello with a Garrett County afghan, thanked him for his service to the Garrett County Public Schools and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Part IV - Return to Public Session
Upon return to public session, Dr. Teets made the following personnel recommendations:
Retirement: Albert Coviello, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, effective 7/1/98
Extended Personal Leave Without Pay: Bonnie Edwards, Secretary V, CTE, 6/25/98
Assignments: Mandy Rush, Summer Maintenance, effective 6/15/98
Frances Denise Blocher, Cafeteria Manager, Grantsville, effective 8/27/87
Mary DeWitt, Cafeteria Manager, Northern Middle, effective 8/27/98
Paul Edwards, Social Studies Teacher, Northern High, effective 8/26/98
Pete Forno, Computer Science Teacher, Northern High, effective 8/26/98
Tracy Rinard, SCCP Rec Program, Broad Ford, 35 hours @$12/hour
Brenda McCartney, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction K-12, effective 07/01/98
Student Assistants for Summer Physics Camp: July 13 - 17, 1998, $5.15/hour/7 hours per day

Upon a motion by Mrs. Sebold, seconded by Mr. Carpenter, the Board unanimously approved the personnel recommendations.
Part V - Adjournment
The Board, by consensus, agreed to adjourn at 8:45 p.m.
